On 12 January 2006, I, Martin Scooter Thompson, committed to my own personal social experiment. I committed to going to see a major motion picture in a real movie theater every day for the next 365 days. This has been done before by the way, so that’s not that exciting I guess. My commitment didn’t end there, however, I also committed to starting a blog and writing a review for each film every day.
I provide, as the first entry to my blog, the history of my film review career (please click here to go straight to that history) and my first review which was for the film, Casanova.
In addition to writing the reviews, I have a unique film rating system called the WIP scale (WIP stands for What I’d Pay). In other words, films are ranked on a scale of $3-$15 according to how much I would be willing to pay to see them on opening day. So, if a film gets a $9, that is the standard rating and means it is worth seeing. Above $9 is definitely worth seeing. Below $9 means that you should wait to see it. This scale provides a lickety quick way of determining if a movie is worth seeing. In addition, the WIP scale for all movies I’ve seen that are currently in theaters is sorted by value. If you’re not sure about a film, click on the title of the film to see the review and read more about it. My reviews are special in that I DO NOT GIVE AWAY IMPORTANT PLOT POINTS.
My reviews are not plot summaries like those of so many film critics. Instead, I try to focus on whether the movie is good or not, what I got out of it, some refresher points on who the actors and directors are, etc. I began this blog at the request of some friends who enjoyed my short reviews I’d email them during the summers. They enjoyed them so much, they asked me to start a movie review blog. So, I thought, “What good is a movie review blog that only has one or two reviews a week?” And, so, mine has at least 7 per week. Truth be told, I have reviewed 21 films in just 16 days because I have doubled up some days (those reviews are called bonus reviews). I also dedicate reviews to fans of my reviews and great people I know which is kind of cool. In any case, I believe you will find my reviews and my side-bar tirades on the movie industry interesting, informative, entertaining, and humorous. Please give my blog a try!
